PREVIEW : One Down, Nine to Go! - Horror on Brighton Rock

CONFIDENTIAL FILES 008: THE DOCTOR WHO WHODUNNIT.

NOTE THIS FILE IS CLASSIFIED AND CONFIDENTIAL. ONCE YOU'VE READ THIS THE FILE WILL EXPLODE.

Ten people arrive on Brighton Rock, a small isolated island off the Brighton coast of England. Each appears to have arrive on the island by happenstance. That is apart from the people who reside in the night watch tower. They receive some unexpected guests who end up stuck with them for the night, as well as that two other strangers who have arrived on the beach. A Doctor and a young girl.

They all come together, ten people trapped inside a night watch tower against their will. Suddenly one dies a tragic and horrible death it is at that point one person in the group is a blood thirsty killer and no one knows who the killer is or who will be the next to die.

Postscript of the Killer

In a postscript, a fishing ship picks up a bottle to find it contains a written confession of the killings inside its trawling nets, which is then sent to Scotland Yard. It is not mentioned how long after the killings the bottle was discovered. In it, the murderer states that he or she had long wished to set an unsolvable puzzle of murder, but is morally limited to victims who are themselves guilty and deserving of such an end. It goes on to say that the identity of the whereabouts of the killer was never found. And that were traces of technology used not from this planet in the killings.

Meet the characters

Doctor John Smith

The true identification as to who he is remains a mystery. He is a Doctor whose practise is in practically everything. He travels inside a small wooden Police Public Call Box.

 Philippa "Pip" Faye

A close friend and companion of Doctor John Smith. 24, from east London. Lives in London St Pancreas, loves to travel, bubbly personality, has a great sense of adventure.

Stoppard

One of the two men who works at the night watch tower, he is the supervisor/caretaker. He's an older man in his early 50's. Grumpy and self centred.

Fitzgerald

The second of the two men who works at the night watch tower. His job is health and safety surveillance. As well that he helps Stoppard when he can. Younger man in his early 20's.

Christopher Columbus

The first person to arrive at the night watch tower. Lee is a hyperactive young man who behaves in a very peculiar manner. He is secretly hiding something, but refuses to say what. Columbus claims to be named after the famous explorer Christopher Columbus by his parents.

Mr Fowler

A critical old man who is pleased by nothing he observes.

Colonel George "Bertie" Brunswick

Retired from the army. Not much is known about Colonel Brunswick apart from the fact that he smokes a pipe and wears polished brown shoes.

Miss Zara Bartholomew

A cool, efficient, resourceful young woman who has a deep dark secret. She has largely worked at secretarial jobs ever since her job as a governess was ended.

Zara has been lured to Brighton Rock in what she thinks is a search for another job, however a far more terrifying fate awaits her.

Terrance Jones

A former soldier in the marines, a navy officer. Terrance is accused of deserting his post when his ship was under siege from a passing torpedo attack, he fled in one of the life boats and left his friends to die.

He comes to the island as a means to try and escape his past. But no matter how far he runs, his past will always catch up with him.

Mrs Maranda Trip

A journalist for the gazette. A strange, aloof, independent woman who speaks offhandedly about her opinions on people and situations.

Looks like 10 normal people and they are.

No! joking, they're not! One of these people isn't human but an alien murderer... see if you can guess which one may be the killer... based on the characteristics you've just read do you think you can work it out?

DOCTOR WHO: An Introduction to Horror on Brighton Rock

SYNOPSIS: A mysterious light in the sky, an unnatural glow in the ocean and a thick fog bring terror to the night watch keepers of Brighton Rock. When the Doctor and Pip arrive, a murder has caused doubt on the safety of the night watch tower. But the Doctor soon discovers something more terrifying and evil than even he could have imagined.

NOTES: Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" is widely considered by many to be her masterpiece. Her best selling novel and the most acclaimed Murder Mystery story of all time. I watched a televised version of "And Then There Were None" over Christmas and I was absolutely fascinated by how clever it was, but the problem was after I had discovered the answer as to whodunnit; the story is not the same for you again when you watch it since.

Murder Mystery stories are only at their most effective to viewers listening or watching them for the first time. After that they seem to be useless. Speaking as a massive Agatha Christie fan I wanted to do Doctor Who does And Then There Were None. I wanted to do a proper murder mystery in the style that Agatha Christie would have done it. Not like Terror of the Vervoids which is far too confusing but its set up in the format like Murder on the Orient Express, everyone's a suspect, anyone potentially could have done the murder.

In my story you have the basic base under siege set up, its a secluded place, you can't get away from it, you're trapped and guess what someone is coming to get you... In my story we have all the necessary ingredients for a base under siege storyline. Ten people, one is not what all they seem to be, one is a blood thirsty murdering alien who won't stop until it kills everyone in the night watch tower.

Other influences included "Horror of Fang Rock" one of my favourite Doctor Who stories, it sort of has that light humour of the Graham William's era but still has that Gothic Horror darkness to the Phillip Hinchcliffe Era. But the chances are the script was a combination between Robert Holmes, Graham Williams and Terrance Dicks (The Writer) so that's probably the reason why its so good. It has the same set up, people trapped in the lighthouse and somethings coming to get them and they don't know what it is or where it is. I wanted to put the characters in proper peril in order to make the drama of the story seem real. It starts off with everyone not really knowing one another, and everything is all very much like a Hitchcock movie where you get to know the characters and you invest in them before the real action starts and the story only properly starts when the first one dies... and then it all takes off from there. This is one of the best stories I think I've ever written and you won't want to miss it...
