INVADERS FROM MARS

INVADERS FROM MARS
THE INVASION OF LITTLE GREEN MEN

Aliens from other worlds have been coming to earth for quite some time, right from under our noses. Some of them look just like you and me, some want to learn, some invade for profit, power or revenge, and some just want to invade and take over.

When the Mars Probe goes missing, strange lights and noises come from space within the Earth's satellite radar systems. What could all of this mean?

In a previous unit case file, The Alien Ambassadors are sent to Earth in the place of human astronauts returning from a mission to Mars - but they, in turn, are kidnapped from the landed space capsule. It seems as though the "astronauts" have been infected with a deadly form of radiation because when they reappear they can kill people merely by touching them.

The Ambassadors were kidnapped by forces opposed to contact between Earth and the aliens, and are being forced to kill, to make it seem as if they are hostile. But on board their mothership, where the real astronauts who were being held, the aliens believed that mankind had imprisoned their ambassadors. If they didn't return, the alien threatened to destroy Earth.

FUN FACTS ABOUT ALIEN AMBASSADORS

  • Their helmets hide the fact that the real astronaut has been replaced.
  • Ambassadors are emitting radiation over two million rads.
  • Ambassadors can kill or disable with an electrical charge from their hands.
  • Bullets are deflected and flattened by a force field.

Magic verses Science! An Introduction to The Wizard's Curse

THE WIZARD'S CURSE

SYNOPSISThe TARDIS arrives in the 12th century in the kingdom of Camelot where a wizard's curse hangs over the kingdom like a plague. Where people are dying of illness, poverty is one a high and the king faces a great crisis. The Doctor is assigned, the King's physician to investigate the power of the Wizard's curse in order to get to the heart of a dark secret which has laid buried in Camelot for years.

NOTES: After the success of "The Knight of Crusadia" Jamie and I decided we wanted to do another story set in Medieval times. We'd thought of doing one with a dragon, and one with a wizard, there were lots of ideas jumbling around in our brains, our problem was getting them out on paper. I was watching "Battlefield" and whilst watching it, there were things in it which didn't tie up so well, and then I thought why not do a story set during the Arthurian legend which Battlefield was based off and see if we can tie in the gaps so that at least to us it would make sense.

I pitched the idea to Chris Riley, and Chris went off and wrote it and emailed it to me, I read it and thought everything seemed to be a pretty good standard or up to the sort of standard that I wanted. I think this one will be a bit of a corker to listen to. It's the first story of the third series where The Doctor and Pip time travel into the past, they meet Uther and Arthur Pendragon, and battle against a Wizard.

Another thing that's interesting is that bit in Battlefield where Ace asks the Seventh Doctor, are you Merlin and the Doctor says "No, but I could be. In my past or possibly my future". This seems perfectly apparent with the fact time is relative.

As well as that the Doctor is believed to be 'a great wizard' when in actual fact all he's doing is applying science rather than magic, the natives just think it's magic because they either chose to believe it's magic or they interpret science as being a form of magic because it's completely new to them.

These sorts of stories are always great fun to do, dare I say it, but I'd love to another one.

INJUSTICE 2: Fueled by Hate - Atrocitus Epic Gear

ATROCITUS
FUELED BY HATE

Hello.

This week a multiverse event for Atrocitus was active in the Injustice 2 Multiverse for gamers to participate in to earn themselves level 30 epic Atrocitus gear. Seeing as this was something I had yet to achieve, it was only in my natural interest to do it. I wanted the level 30 gear, but there has also been something that I've been wanting to get for Atrocitus for quite a while now and that was the Red Devil shader.

The Red Devil shader was something that was up for a prize if you completed all the Multiverse requirements so that for me made it all to play for to ensure I get the shader and the other prizes that came with it. I'm pleased to say I managed to get the shader and a whole new gear set for Atrocitus by completing the Multiverse.

If you're reading this and are a good Atrocitus player then please leave your comments below.

The Haunting of Clarence Abbey - An Introduction to The Abominable Nun

DOCTOR WHO
THE ABOMINABLE NUN

SYNOPSIS: Clarence Abbey is haunted. The building was a convent for penitent women and so the story goes, The Mother Superior gone insane had drowned in a lake near the Abbey. The same night she arouse from the mist, killed a man before disappearing into the fog.

Since that night, The Haunting Specter wanders the abbey's passages in the hours of darkness. The story goes on to say that anyone who sees this nun will be the next to die. When a young girl mysteriously disappears, The Dean of the Abbey 'Mother Bernadette' has no option but to call in the police. Her call is answered when a blue box unexpectedly arrives in the Abbey grounds.

Fascinated by the story, The Doctor takes the case. He and Pip come to investigate the mystery of the ghostly nun and in doing so they uncover a dark secret that lies buried beneath the abbey for almost one hundred years.

NOTES: We're entering a more darker, more humid period to the series. The first two episodes were a bit more fun, easy going modes of story telling, but it's always good to mix it up a bit and experiment with different genres and see what you get out of that as a result. I remember talking to Jaime about going down other avenues and re thinking what would make a good mix of stories to tell.

We got talking about doing more morbid and darker stories. This week's I think is very chilling. We're in a haunted abbey which is under siege from a ghost; and a very scary one. Nun's are scary just as old people can be scary. So I figured why not take influence from one of my favourite era's of doctor who, gothic horror?

So we got a haunted abbey, a ghostly nun, mysterious goings on in the convent and a desire to know what's going on and where the story is going to go. That's the basic set up. the whole point of this in a sense was just a means to exploring other avenues and diverse means of how a story can be told. As that's what Doctor Who does best really, it can be as diverse and dynamic as you want it to be and you could tell a comedy story and the next tell a gothic horror story and then maybe do comedy with a gothic horror set up, that was the point I'm making in how something can be one thing and is diverse enough to change into something else.

The Horror genre is always a tricky one to pull off because you do have to ask yourself, how can you make things scary? not just scary but effectively scary? on radio, that seems fairly straight forward you just act scared to what is supposedly there to scare you and put a soundtrack over the top of it in order to captivate a surrounding environment in the scene. It's quite complex to find an effective way of doing it. I thought it was very important to convince the listeners that they are where they are, its what I thought would really sell it, if they can picture the ghostly nun and her presence from a cold chill in the room. That's the challenge. Hopefully, I can pull it off.

WHAT MAKES DOCTOR WHO SCARY?

What comes into your mind when I say ‘scary’? I’m not just talking about Doctor Who here: what must a horror/suspense thriller do to make you unnerved; to give you nightmares? I’m not a horror movie watcher myself, but I know a fair bit about what makes me scared from Doctor Who.

Is it the suspense-induced trepidation? Is it the gore (rarely seen in Doctor Who these days)? Is it some of the suggested notions? Or is it something deeper: the fear of not knowing? Today I will adventure into what exactly it is that makes us scared of Doctor Who, and some of the basic principles in terrifying your audience.

I think I should use Steven Moffat’s ‘Empty Child’ as an example here. These gas-masked-zombies were the nightmare of my childhood. There was something about them, which really agitated me – actually, several things about them. The concept itself – a young boy killed tragically in the blitz and reborn via future technology – is actually quite lovely. But Moffat decided to pervert this image by adding some less desirable features; the fixed gas mask, the cure turned into a plague, the innocent but chilling calls for mummy – all of which distressed my 6-year-old self. What Moffat did here was intimidate the audience by making them assume that this mysterious child was actually a force for evil, when, in fact, he was simply lacking a few basic morals. It was the image here that was scary; not so much the idea. I’d say that’s the best way to worry children.

Adults have done all the creepy-child movies, though; they’re used to these elementary scaring techniques. I’m often chagrined that a villain is deemed terrifying purely because it looks/sounds creepy; I’m looking for something more than just in the five senses, but exploring a deeper horror; what sick motives inspire this creature? Where did it come from? Is it obeying a higher force as a mere puppet, or does it have its own agenda; its own plans for the universe? A lot of the time, raising questions like this early on can add to the mystery of an antagonist, thus mounting tension; what, accordingly, is it capable of?

Some of the enticing, often transitory concepts and philosophies are what truly disconcert me. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit is undoubtedly the episode, which discomforts me the most. A lot of this is because of the dark thinking – one of which is ‘the world before time’, where the Beast is supposedly from. There’s the disturbing theory of Winter Quay; the human battery farm – a place where the Angels (malevolent and concerned only with keeping you alive, not with your wellbeing), driven by their ravenousness, take captive any humans they can, trapping them to live out the same life perpetually, in a cold, damp room.

There’s no escape. Your only company is with sadistic statues. How ghastly a thought is that? Sometimes, it’s not seeing the idea in action that does it, it’s letting the mind’s eye speculate; evoking foul and dark imagery.

Something I’m averse to is excessive violence. I’m not suggesting that it should be avoided to the extent of undermining realism (with BBC ruling, we don’t even get blood when people are shot now – utterly absurd and a ridiculous exaggeration of an otherwise sensible rule), but in the case of detracting from certain audiences (those whose moral beliefs say to avoid immoral/gory content, those are repulsed by blood and gore, the children whose parents have seen the show and been turned against letting their children watch it), it’s necessary.

Overuse of violence is, for the most part, demonstrating a lack of effort, inspiration and/or originality from a writer’s half, because it’s a clichéd, tried-and-tested device. It may be visually appealing to some, or, in certain cases (depicting a macabre comeuppance), required, but if it pervades a narrative, and is the main technique to frighten a viewer, it’s proof that the writer either can’t be bothered or is obviously unable to think of an alternative. To paraphrase: whilst it is at times crucial, it’s not the best methodology.

One of the last few options I’m going to mention is showing the magnitudes of an action/victims of a villain. It’s one of the places where Moffat’s capacity for horror becomes prominent, viz. the Great Intelligence. They’re a manipulating force for decades, and their appearance is usually saved to the climax of a story.

You see how they go about their tasks; abducting their employees as children and brainwashing them – Miss Kizlet, for an example, exhibits iniquity and superiority for most of The Bells of Saint John, then, it is dramatically revealed that, in fact, she is an indoctrinated child inside a woman’s body. The Great Intelligence is the true evil, the true Machiavelli – experimenting with an idea or a character over a series gives a chance to fuel tension and pose more questions, plus create numerous examples of what they are capable of.

Finally, I move on to the titular modus operandi: The Fear of the Unknown (xenophobia being closest as the fear of foreigners and unfamiliar customs). It’s commonly used in fantasy and paranormal tales, hence being the main feature of this Hide anticipation article. Because Doctor Who is categorically science fiction, most unexplained events usually require an explanation; otherwise the fans get quite rightfully narked.

Occasionally, though, the writer ventures outside the realm of sci-fi, and enters a new area of speculative fiction with some kinds of ghostly undertones. An example of this: The Satan Pit, where the Beast is able to tell details about the characters, possess things transcendentally, survive outside on an uninhabitable plain (you could put this down to a psychic field, the psycho-grant (the name Cassandra gave to her “Goodbye trampoline, hello Blondie” contraption) and a strong physical form respectively, but, let’s be honest: he was the devil).

Sometimes giving a methodical scientific justification for something takes away from the mystery and terror of it – this would have been the case if the Beast was clarified. Another example is Gwyneth’s death in The Unquiet Dead; it’s so haunting, because you know she couldn’t have helped them if she was dead, yet she did. It leaves the episode on a mystical note. It’s a small part of the narrative and thus isn’t detriment to the overall storyline for more fastidious viewers, but, conversely, keeps to the pseudohistorical-fantasy/horror genre addressed to the episode.

Hide will almost certainly be divisive. The Doctor Who fandom is split into three categories: theist, atheist, and agnostic (as is the rest of the world).

Some agnostics or even some atheists will happily accept, for the enjoyment of the episode, some kind of afterlife or spiritual existence. There will be some, however, who will considerably irked if the basis of the story is a celestial and wraithlike one. I’m open to either endings myself. If the ghost is explained with tentative care (say, there’s been some kind of ‘time eruption’, which has caused the vortex to bleed, and the fragments, dispersed through time, have been able to restore the ‘spirit’, the entity, of those who have died in the house.

To close the gap, the lost spirits would then have to be at peace so that the bridge is open for the Doctor to seal permanently – to do this, they’d have to bring justice to their killer, or help their loved ones come to terms with their loss, etc.), then possibly it could be done, but I still think the idea of for once keeping it preternatural is more desirable, like The Satan Pit, The Chase, The Mind Robber (not counting novelised explanations for the Land of Fiction) or The Unquiet Dead. They’re stories which bear more of an impression because of this divine undercurrent (maybe not my classic examples, because they’re literary manifestations).

It’s interested me how Neil Cross (who, after The Rings of Akhaten, I have full confidence in), has decided to add in the character of a clairvoyant.

I’m a huge fan of ITV’s fantasy drama Afterlife, and that is primarily a character study of Alison Mundy (Lesley Sharp – aka Sky Silvestry), a medium, who is locked in solitude, desperately trying to escape the voices of the dead. The echoes of the deceased plague her, because they can get through to her – as she describes it, they’re drawn to her ‘like a magnet’.

She’s overwhelmed by compunction if she doesn’t help them but she wants them to go away. She’s a recluse because no one will believe her. Those she helps end up suffering – their loved ones grow to hate Alison because they think she’s clinically insane. The more she tries to help, the more she does wrong. The more she doesn’t help, the guiltier she feels.

I’d like to see Cross tackle the same sort of character in Hide – also because it means that even if we get an explanation as to why there are ghosts in the house, there’s still the underlying mystery of her character, whom you can have your own opinions on.

There’s much more to be anticipating for Hide, including a (or maybe more than one) romantic backstory. It’s also set in the 70s, which is an era I’ve been longing to see revisited. I hope I’ve increased your anticipation for Hide, now, which I’m fully confident, will deliver the goods.

Send the cleaners to the cleaners!

THE CLEANERS - RETURN TO EARTH

Got a mess in time that needs cleaning up? Never fear, the cleaners are here to sort it all out for you.

CASE FILE: THE CLEANERS

Who are the cleaners? Where do they come from?

No one really knows. They just turn up when needed and run a thorough, investigative inspection of the area with time distortion or wherever the problem is and clean it up. They wipe the memories of everyone involved as a means of them covering their tracks and not being able to be traced.

Whatever the problem, big or small, the cleaners intervene when they believe the problem is a threat to the universe. They wear white and possess powers not even the timelords have. They go back as far as time began and have been there as a watchful eye of mankind to make sure everything is kept in order and that everything within the infinite universe is perfectly balanced.

What are their powers?

They can close time windows or time doors with a snap of their fingers, can wipe out towns, cities, people or even whole planets depending on the situation at hand. They have the ability to refresh or wipe people's memories, they can apperate and disapperate within time and outer time and between universes, they have infinite wisdom and are very knowledgeable of everything that can or will happen in the past, present and future.

If the cleaners detect a problem in your area, they will notify you that they are coming to run an inspection, if you fail the inspection, they will not hesitate to place the matter into their own hands and eliminate the problem however they see fit.

Who is their boss?

The main cleaner is in command of all the other cleaners and is the one who sends out notices that they are going to inspect the problem if you do not sort it out for yourself. She leads the operations the cleaners take part in and is the main authority figure. No one knows of her origins or real name, but she is a creature that lives outside time. Even though the main cleaner is in control of all the other cleaners, the main cleaner does not have a boss to answer to.

Why do they wear white?

It is the natural colour and white is the distinctive look of their uniforms so that it makes it easy for people to identify them.

How can you pass an inspection?

If you pass an inspection, the cleaners leave you alone. They don't feel the need to take any action. You pass an inspection by removing the problem before they have a chance to. If you succeed, they leave you alone. If you fail, they consider no other choice to take action. They give you an allotted time to solve the problem by yourself, when that time is up and the problem still hasn't been resolved then they come back and clean up the mess, therefore solving the problem.

Plant Life - The Krynoid Incursion

PLANT LIFE: THE KRYNOID INCURSION

The TARDIS lands on silo station one where a team of botanists studying the impressive plant life of the Congo Basin. However, two members of the team go missing and the Doctor is sure that there is something else roaming the jungles. The Botany team refuse to leave, one of the team, Kevin becomes infected by Krynoid DNA.

The Doctor struggles to complete the impossible task of saving the man's life as the others go in search of Harker. But will the team leave the planet alive? When Kevin becomes a Krynoid and prevents the Doctor and the others from escaping. Will they be able to leave alive? Or will they endanger the human race by bringing back one of the most deadly plant-based life forms the universe has seen?

Plant Life becomes our enemy. The Krynoid is a form of intelligent plant life that feeds on animals. On planets where the Krynoid takes hold, animal life becomes extinct. It can infect an animal with its spores, causing the "host" creature to mutate into a Krynoid, which retains some of that host's knowledge, memory, and intelligence. The Krynoid is also able to transfer some of its power to the local vegetation, making plant life hostile and deadly. No one knows for sure how Krynoid plant pods travel through space. One theory is that their planet of origin is volcanic, and the pods are shot out (in pairs) by the eruptions.

FUN FACTS ON THE KRYNOID

  • A Krynoid has tentacles like branches and roots
  • A Krynoid does not need nitrogen to survive
  • A Krynoid grows from large gourd-like plants
  • A Krynoid is mobile and seeks out for food

Foxy! An Introduction to Trouble with the Vixen

DOCTOR WHO
TROUBLE WITH THE VIXEN

SYNOPSISThe Vixen is back, for revenge! The Doctor and Pip fall into her trap when the TARDIS gets caught in a time loop.

The Vixen has discovered new technology from a race of aliens that will transform her into any person of her choice, and she sets off to wreak havoc amongst the universe. Can the Doctor break free of her time loop and find out what she's up to and stop her before it's too late.

NOTES: It was always the plan when writing "The Vixen Elite" to bring the Vixen back and that she would make an appearance in series three. What Jamie and I didn't count on was when she would appear, we decided to place the vixen story quite early on in the series as a way to build on the relationship between the Doctor and Pip. Her plan would be bigger and badder than the last time.

The Rani is more scientific and wants to get on with her research but it's the way she goes about it that makes her a threat to the universe, with the Vixen it's slightly different as what makes her dangerous is her curiosity to destroy and how she learns from it and how she believes blowing up planets and killing people will do good, she sort of has good intentions but at the same time is also very evil which makes her a nasty piece of work.

She interrupts the Doctor and Pip's holiday to trap them so that she can get the Doctor out the way so she can carry on with her plan, will the Doctor be able to break free of her time loop and find out what's she's up to and stop her, well... you'll have to listen in and find out.

A Fix with the Sontarans: An Introduction to The Hero of Sontar

A FIX WITH THE SONTARANS

Ahead of the new series of Doctor Who Audio Adventures starting on Saturday, this series of blog posts looks into each episode in greater depth and keeps you up to the date with all the things you need to know and look forward to.

EPISODE ONE: THE HERO OF SONTAR

Synopsis: The Doctor knows of the great Kraagh and what he has done for the Sontaran Empire. But he never thought he would meet him face to face.

The Doctor and Pip are confronted with a problem where they have to stop at a pit stop planet of Dedmos in outer worlds of the galaxy, there a battle is going on between the refugees and the sixteenth Sontaran war squad, lead by the acclaimed Hero of Sontar Commander Kraagh. Kraagh is plotting something that could mean death and disaster to lots of innocent people, and the Doctor must stop him before its too late.

Notes: The title is a bit of a give away with the word "Sontar" in the title, obviously, there are going to be Sontarans in this story. I think when starting a new series, episode one is always the pivotal one, the episode that starts off the whole series and sets everything up and I like to try for the opening of a new series to have some sort of gimmick. I thought it adequate to do a story which featured Sontarans as a starting point.

The funny thing is at first I didn't want to have a Sontaran story in this series at all, for some reason, it just wasn't on the cards. It only came about when I sat down one evening and started brainstorming little bullet point ideas for the first story of the series that the idea came up of doing a Sontaran story and out of all the ideas, that was the one I went with. Writing it wasn't a difficult task, I think I wrote the whole thing in just under a week, three or four days.

The sand planet of Dedmos came about when I saw a painting of a desert in an art exhibition I went to see in London, and I remember the colour on the canvas and how the sky was painted red and the sand had shades of grey to replicates falling stars, and I thought that would be an elaborate setting for the listener to picture in their minds when thinking up of the worlds in their psyche. Because there are no pictures, you have to rely on the sounds and effects that you have to make up the worlds your trying to create and as such, I think the sound design and effects in this particular episode are spot on at creating every background within it.

Injustice 2: SHAZAM - Black Adam Multiverse

SHAZAM
BLACK ADAM MULTIVERSE

With the stamina of Shu, the speed of Haru, the strength of Amon, the wisdom of Zehuti, the power of Aton and the courage of Mehen, you are unstoppable, MIGHTY ATOM!

A multiverse for Black Adam popped up in the Multiverse over the last weekend, and it was one which I have been waiting for for quite some time, certainly since the ultimate edition of Injustice 2 was updated to legendary edition and you could start getting level thirty gear for characters.

Black Adam is described by most players as "The god of damage" I think this is because of his meter burn special moves and combined command combos and command grabs, Black Adam can take away half your life in a few simple moves and for me is one of the most annoying characters to play against, which is why I like to play as him. He has super cool lightning powers.

The story of Black Adam is that long ago, the council of wizards—powerful beings that held dominion over all magic in the world—chose the warrior Black Adam as their champion, granting him vast magical powers and abilities. However, that power only further skewed Adam's already maligned moral compass, and rather than use his newfound gifts to help others, he used it to dominate them.
Adam turned against the wizards and after a brutal battle was imprisoned for thousands of years. But now he is free once more, and his insatiable quest to conquer the world, to control all magic, continues. The only thing that stands in his way is Shazam!, the new champion of magic—and Black Adam will do anything in his power to destroy him and assert his position as the true ruler of the world.
Driven by a need to rule, incredibly arrogant and one of the most powerful beings on the planet, Black Adam lives by a simple creed: kneel at his feet or be crushed by his boot.
