A FIX WITH THE SONTARANS
Ahead of the new series of Doctor Who Audio Adventures starting on Saturday, this series of blog posts looks into each episode in greater depth and keeps you up to the date with all the things you need to know and look forward to.
EPISODE ONE: THE HERO OF SONTAR
Synopsis: The Doctor knows of the great Kraagh and what he has done for the Sontaran Empire. But he never thought he would meet him face to face.
Notes: The title is a bit of a give away with the word "Sontar" in the title, obviously, there are going to be Sontarans in this story. I think when starting a new series, episode one is always the pivotal one, the episode that starts off the whole series and sets everything up and I like to try for the opening of a new series to have some sort of gimmick. I thought it adequate to do a story which featured Sontarans as a starting point.
The funny thing is at first I didn't want to have a Sontaran story in this series at all, for some reason, it just wasn't on the cards. It only came about when I sat down one evening and started brainstorming little bullet point ideas for the first story of the series that the idea came up of doing a Sontaran story and out of all the ideas, that was the one I went with. Writing it wasn't a difficult task, I think I wrote the whole thing in just under a week, three or four days.
The sand planet of Dedmos came about when I saw a painting of a desert in an art exhibition I went to see in London, and I remember the colour on the canvas and how the sky was painted red and the sand had shades of grey to replicates falling stars, and I thought that would be an elaborate setting for the listener to picture in their minds when thinking up of the worlds in their psyche. Because there are no pictures, you have to rely on the sounds and effects that you have to make up the worlds your trying to create and as such, I think the sound design and effects in this particular episode are spot on at creating every background within it.
