Summer is starting here in Britain, with the weather set to be its best yet. Weather reports show it's going to be between 26 and 28 degrees, it seems like the perfect opportunity for me to get my Hawaiian shirts out of the wardrobe.
We are halfway through the year, and I'm feeling pretty good. This post is basically a summary or review of how I feel 2018 has gone for me so far. So here's my story as it stands from the last six months.
In January I had to end up leaving my job because it was deemed too stressful. I left on medical grounds and as of the beginning of January, I was jobless. That of course, meant having to get back on the chain of job hunting and looking for something I could do to earn myself some money to get the ball rolling again. Things didn't really start happening for me until March. So for the best part of two and half months, I was unemployed. But that didn't mean to say I was sitting at home not doing anything. Throughout that time I did things each day to actively help myself, I would set myself small targets and made it my goal to make sure I achieved those targets, by doing that it gave me something to work towards and made me feel like I did something with my day.
I had a lot of free time on my hands to do stuff I've always wanted to do but couldn't because I was too busy working. Me time like I've always wanted to listen to the Harry Potter audiobooks, I've been able to do that, Stephen Fry is very entertaining, as he voices all the characters. Even the women. That provided some light entertainment whilst I was getting on with other tasks. The occasional media work would pop up now and then, and that meant I could do something I enjoyed and get paid cash in hand for the day and that suited me fine.
It also gave me an ideal opportunity to think, what do I want to do with my life? and I've known from a very young age that I wanted to work in media. Film, TV, Acting, Theatre, or Radio. That's when Radio Verulam came along, I signed up to become a volunteer and was accepted. I had an induction at the end of January to join, started properly as a studio assistant at the end of February. And I was also starring in a production of Frankenstein at the time. And I was working backstage on a studio production of The Effect. So I had a lot to keep me busy.
Working at Radio Verulam has been great. I'm growing from strength to strength and developing my skills and experience in that profession. I've also been able to develop new skills I didn't know I had, as a social media contributor. I was getting invited to a lot of events and asked to help with social media and social marketing, particularly with Facebook and Instagram, and when you use those two platforms for personal use, it makes the job easy. Live streaming, photos, etc.
I'm now on the morning show, weekday mornings from 8am. Monday to Thursday. That's been great. And I'm socializing more. I've been getting to know my fellow volunteers very well.
In March I managed to get a job as a waiter in a Thai restaurant in St Albans. Just as a way of earning some money so I could provide a steady income for what I wanted to do, with the overall goal always remaining for me to make a success working within media, as that's where my passion and main interest lies.
I worked as a waiter for three months, not the most enjoyable experience but the pay was pretty good so sometimes you have to take the rough with the smooth. One would get quite stressed out when dealing with customers, members of the public. One example being, a Saturday afternoon, the restaurant was half full, it was lunchtime, it's going to busy. My job is to make the customers feel welcome, I deliver immaculate service, bring you your food, I serve your table. Now, serve, doesn't mean f*cking servant!
There was one man who came in that afternoon who was particularly fussy. He complained several times about his food being late. With the volume of people that were in the restaurant at the time and the fact that the restaurant was short staffed on waiters that afternoon, he was waiting around for quite some time, but this particular person came across as very arrogant and hangry. That made him impertinent. The chefs were all pretty stressed out in the kitchen. He was complaining, "Where's my food?" and I'd go up to the kitchen and ask the chefs about how long the food's going to be, normally in this kind of situation you go back to the customer/customers and say "I'm really sorry, but the food's going to be another five or ten minutes" and most people's response to that is "that's fine" but because this man was an impertinent old git, when I told him his food was going to be another ten minutes or so, he said "well that's not good enough!" Now, being blunt and rude isn't going to make me want to speed up the process, if anything, it's going to make me want to slow it down. Waiters are the direct link between the customer and the kitchen, and if you start grambling and moaning at us, and being rude to us, then we're not going to be best inclined to make sure that your food hurries up.
And I had to deal with a few people like him. I wasn't always the best person at dealing with these sorts of things under pressure. I very much preferred it when the restaurant was a lot quieter. Afternoon shifts were good for me because I'd clock out just as all the evening people were coming in for dinner, so I'd get to escape from the rupture of a busy environment and get to chill out for the evening.
But I now know what it's like to work as a waiter, and it's horrible. I don't want to do it again. I left my job at the restaurant because now, I have a new job. In London. I'm going to be a radio presenter on my own show, on Relaks Radio. I'm very excited about it.
My friends and I are good. We're planning big things for the summer, and I shall see what the second half of the year has to offer me. I started off this year, not in a very good place and I've managed to turn that around for myself and have landed in a much more comfortable position, which if done right, can really take off to get me where I want to be. So I'm happy.
Doctor Who Audio Adventures is to take a rest, the third series will continue in July with a two-part adventure featuring the Doctor's old enemies The Cybermen in Requiem to the Rocket Men, which sees the Doctor, Pip, and Kara, stranded in space and a chilling invasion of earth plot. The world is about to be upgraded.
SYNOPSIS: The Doctor and Pip arrive in Stockbridge where The Doctor is reunited with an old friend. Kara Connor. It's been a long time since they have seen each other and Kara thought she would never see the Doctor again. When the Doctor and Pip stumble across into her life, Kara is happily married and has moved on with her life since leaving the TARDIS.
The reunion is interrupted by some uninvited guests who plan to destroy Earth. Can the doctor save the planet from extinction?
NOTES: This was always the plan, to get Kara back into Doctor Who. And it's about time. She was a bit later due for a return than I originally expected her to come back.
If I had done series three in 2017, Kara would have turned up again in the 2017 Christmas special, which was originally planned to have the Yeti and the great intelligence in it, but that didn't happen due to the fact that there wasn't a series last year.
So that meant that we had to come up with a way of getting Kara back into the show very quickly. I emailed Christopher Cribb and got him and his partner Stephen Hynes to write a draft script for the episode which had a title which was penciled in "Forget Me Not" which was modified to "Return to Earth" in later drafts.
The idea of the story was that Kara would be living an alternate life, one where she had never met the Doctor, and the result of the problem was that she had a Beetle creature controlling her mind, making her forget. When that fell through and Chris and Stephen had to write something else very quickly, I worked with them very closely to ensure the best possible result and in the end, I don't know who came up with the final idea, but what was decided was a time fugitive had arrived in Stockbridge and was using a dangerous device which could destroy the world and the Doctor, Pip, and Kara had to work together in order to fix the problem.
With that idea in place, Chris and Stephen wrote the script in ten days.
As I speak there are still episodes from 1960's Doctor Who that are still missing. But there may still be hope for us loyal and dedicated fans who desperately want to see these episodes. It has been said that 97 of the missing episodes could be returned to the BBC, an expert has claimed. But it might be best that we bide our time until the secretive private collectors are ready to hand them over.
But more on that in a minute, right now I'd like to go into the background of how this whole ordeal began. In the late 1960's/ early 1970's, the BBC was running out of storage space and that meant them having to scrap, wipe, burn and destroy some of the old tapes they had. And some of those tapes included Doctor Who episodes. Lots of adventures such as: "Marco Polo", "The Daleks Masterplan", "Power of the Daleks", "The Macra Terror", "The Evil of the Daleks", "The Abominable Snowman", "Fury from the Deep", "The Wheel in Space" amongst loads of others now cease to exist.
But, thankfully, Doctor Who was a show that was sold abroad and could be tracked down. And in 2013, that's just what did happened. The announcement was made in October 2013, just weeks before the 50th anniversary special that nine episodes had been discovered. Those being "The Enemy of the World" and "The Web of Fear" from the Patrick Troughton era. "Web of Fear" of course being a story that most fans were excited to see.
After that, there hasn't been any more new announcements of any other findings. But the fans can hope wishing upon a star for more episodes to turn up so that we can see them for the first time.
I remember watching "Enemy of the World" for the first time when it was found as a complete story and feeling so happy and proud to be a fan of the show and watching something so brilliant.
BBC Doctor Who archivist Paul Vanezis, who recovered four missing episodes in the 1980s, has revealed he knows where more of the remaining episodes are located.
Sadly for Whovians like me, some of the William Hartnell and most of the Patrick Troughton era were largely destroyed when the BBC did its spring clean of its archives in the 1970's. It was a time before home video had been invented, so it was decided that the tapes would be either wiped or destroyed. 1970's was moving into an age of colour television and it was decided that no one wanted black and white TV shows again. But a few old episodes were saved and picked up and put into private collections.
Personally, though, I wouldn't say that we should put our hopes up in thinking they'll be an announcement tomorrow of a big find, or any find for that matter. These things will come as shock and at the moment when we are least expecting it. Like in 2011 when "Galaxy 4 Episode 3" and "The Underwater Menace Episode 2" were found. It was a nice surprise but I thought that that would be the last finding of any episodes, and then we got nine in one go in 2013.
Of course, I would love all the missing episodes to be found and returned safe and sound to the BBC. I was watching a reconstruction of "The Wheel in Space Episode 1" that to me is an excellent episode of Doctor Who, one of which I would really like to see in action. It's on my list of episodes to be found.
I'd also liked to see "The Daleks Masterplan", "The Highlanders", "The Faceless Ones", "The Evil of the Daleks", "The Abominable Snowmen", "Fury from the Deep" and episodes 1 and 4 of "The Invasion turn up. I can only keep my fingers crossed and hope that one day, all of them will be found. But anything would be brilliant.
Thanks to everyone who have voted in this weekend's voting poll on Facebook and Twitter.
This week, you have voted for me to play as Red Hood. I must admit it was an interesting choice, as he's not one of my strongest characters and I haven't played as him for a little while so I've got a little bit of practicing to do.
I will be playing as Red Hood all of this week, with the next voting poll up next weekend.
Hello and Welcome to a new feature on my blog where I review one film I have seen this month and talk about it. The Movie of the Month. This month's film is "Avengers Infinity War" the latest of the Marvel Studios franchise in the series of Marvel films.
The Story: Thanos who is an evil tyrant, wants to collect all of the six infinity stones which are immortal relics that have existed since the big bang. If Thanos gathers all the infinity stones together, the power of all six stones combined will allow him to wipe out half of the universe's population with the snap of his fingers. He has a special glove 'the infinity gaunlet' in which he uses to fit all of the stones and as such enable his powers. In order to stop him, a huge range of characters from the marvel universe and from different marvel movies that we've seen all must put aside their differences and come together in an attempt to try and stop him.
Movie Trailer
The first thing to say about Infinity War is every single thing about it, is absolutely enormous. From the size of its cast to the breath of the canvas upon which it's playing out, the size of the conflicts and the battles, the scope of what's at stake, and also to the length of it's running time and the projections of its box office.
It's directed by the Russos who I think, do a decent job of taking something of which you have such a vast expanse and drawing things in and making sure what you have all the way through is a story which audiences can follow, parts which you can connect with story elements that will make sense. The first thing to say is, there are two different responses to this film, one will be from people who are absolute mega Marvel fans who are truly invested in the Marvel universe and its characters. Now I've been vocal in the past that I'm not that much of a Marvel fan. In fact, I like to think of myself as more of a DC fan, but there will be some people who come to watch Infinity War having not seen all the previous Marvel films leading up to this, or people who may have only seen snippets but have got the actual gist of who these characters are and where they come from. Now it rather depends on you to decide whether or not this does or doesn't accommodate both kinds of audience.
I think one of the things which is both a strength and a weakness of Infinity War is that does play as far as I could see very strongly towards pleasing the fans. As much as I did love it, and really did enjoy it. I think what the fans like about it is that it takes the worlds it explores seriously, it takes the story seriously, there's lots of humor in it, mainly from the guardians of the galaxy but it's not humor shoved down your throat as in "this is funny, you will laugh at this" I like to laugh at things because they're funny, they naturally make me laugh. I also liked how we got some nice interplay between Iron Man and Spider-Man, and the banter between the Guardians of the Galaxy, playful bickering in between the action, and that sort of stuff can become a suttle ice breaker it sort of calms you down and relaxes you.
Moments that I particularly enjoyed and liked a lot were scenes between Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange. Those were the highlights of the film which I really liked. Of course, the character I liked the most throughout the whole film was Thanos, who I felt as a villain got his fair share of screen time, it's almost as if Infinity War gives off the impression that this is the story about the baddie and carry on watching to see if he succeeds. What makes Thanos an interesting villain for me is that he is not like your stereotypical bad guy who wants to blow things up and kill people, of course, he does do those things, but he as a character comes across to me as being this dictator who has sort of good intentions, but at the same time is a mass murderer and vindictive tyrant.
I did feel coming out of the film, as well as feeling a little bit shaken up by the events which happened in it, my friend who had come to see the film with me and myself both had different experiences of it. If think of a film like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two, or just films which divided audiences, what became clear is even though we thought the same things about the film, were interesting and admirable our emotional responses were quite different. I'm sure that main Marvel fans would have completely invested into it, and there are a few moments where people whooped, cheered, and gasped, and in some cases screamed and were properly emotionally engaged. And I know for a fact there were people in the cinema I was in watching it, doing the exact same thing, so it proves to be a film which works with its audience.
The friend who saw the film with me, when I asked what did he think, he liked it, but he didn't feel that much emotionally engaged with it as the majority of the audience was. As a result of that, he told me ended up seeing things which were a lot more problematic. And I think the thing that has to be said about when you're viewing this type of fantasy film, is that a lot of it is to do with where you're coming from in terms of your relationship to the characters and the franchise. That is a really big part of it. As part of extending the world and the franchise, it's done that job really well, It brings together an extraordinary number of elements into a film which is two and half hours long, I know to the core audience it didn't feel long, but for me watching it, I did feel that it was a bit lengthy and I'm not sure that it needed to be as long as it was.
There were two main points in the film which I found particularly interesting about the story which I thought about after having seen it.
One was the fact that Tony Stark and Steve Rogers (Iron Man, and Captain America) don't meet in this film. Which shows there are still after effect elements from Civil War that have affected the friendship between Captain America and Iron Man and probably won't resolve fully.
Two, Doctor Strange. There is a scene where Doctor Strange reviews all the hundreds of millions of possible outcomes that await them and out of all of them, there is only one outcome where they are able to beat to Thanos. I'm wondering if what happened was all part of Doctor Strange's visitation and that Iron Man must be a critical part of Thanos's downfall. Strange did say to Tony Stark and Spider-Man, "If it comes to protecting the stone or the both of you, I will let you die if it means protecting my time stone" and then he gives up the stone to save Tony's life, and when he died Strange said to Tony Stark "There was no other way". So I think in the one outcome Strange had foreseen that Thanos was defeated this has to be all part of that somehow.
I think overall, the visual effects are fantastic, there are some epic battle scenes throughout as well as great acting from a great cast, the sense of danger is perfectly apparent, the film takes risks that you don't expect, and for its core audience it delivers and it works.
I'm going to give Avengers Infinity War, Eight Infinity Gauntlets out of Ten.
CLARA OSWALD - SIX MYSTERIES OF THE IMPOSSIBLE GIRL!
The mystery of the Impossible Girl may have been solved in "The Name of the Doctor", but there are still a few questions left unanswered.
1. Who Gave Clara the Doctor's Number?
In ‘The Bells of Saint John’, when Clara is having trouble connecting to the Internet, she is given the phone number for the TARDIS by “the woman in the shop”, leading to her meeting the Doctor.
However, we never learn the identity of this woman. Could it be River Song? One of the many Claras scattered across time and space? The TARDIS itself? Did Martha Jones’s freelancing work dry up and she’s now working at PC World? Or perhaps someone else entirely?
3. How did Clara end up working at Coal Hill School?
Aside from the mystery of qualifying as an English teacher in the space of one episode, surely it can’t be a coincidence that Clara is now working at Coal Hill School – the very same London school that Doctor Who‘s original companions Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright taught at back in 1963, and which the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan attended.
But who’s that named as the Chairman of the Governors on the school sign? None other than Ian.
4. Who was driving the car that nearly killed Clara's father?
We never see who’s behind the wheel of the car which seems to be aiming directly for Clara’s father while he’s distracted by “the most important leaf in human history” in ‘The Rings of Akhaten’ – and the driver keeps on going without stopping after Ellie pulls him out of its path.
If the car hadn’t been there, Clara’s parents would never have met and Clara would never have been born to save the Doctor. Could we see a flashback to this highly significant event?
5. What was the story about the pigeon?
It’s probably not the most important plot strand left dangling in ‘The Time of the Doctor’, but was anybody else a bit intrigued to know why Clara’s dad was quite so eager for Clara’s nan to tell the story of “the pigeon in the restaurant” at Christmas dinner?
Steven Moffat has returned to reference more random throwaway lines than that in the past, so maybe we’ll find out one day.
6. Who was on Clara's stepmother's list of potential boyfriends?
“You could make a boy band out of my list”, says Linda at Christmas dinner after revealing that she has “a list of suggestions” to help Clara move on from the Doctor. But who exactly was on the list?Answers on a postcard, please.
Today I'd like to write a post about something a little different. Rather the usual updates on projects I've got going on on my channel. I thought I might take the time to talk about two very special people in my life at the moment.
For those of you who don't know, the two people in this photograph with me are Joel and Mary. How do I know them? I met Mary a year and a half ago as we had started to work together on a play at the time, and we've been very good friends since then. It was through her that I got the privilege to meet her boyfriend Joel. I've known and been friends with Mary for a year and a half now and I've known Joel for just over a year.
Once you've read that post, come back and continue with this post because I think it's important for you to gain an understanding into the background behind how my friendship with Mary became apparent to me, and it will help put things into context.
I have explained in the past, not going into too greater detail, but I have somewhat highlighted and explained a little the importance of my friends and how special they are to me.
It's now the middle of June, we're halfway into this year and at the moment, I feel pretty good in myself in terms of the way I am feeling at the moment in having a relationship with myself and in terms of having a good relationship with friends. Especially seeing as I felt I started off this year not feeling too good about they way I stood with certain people, I felt that I had made crucial mistakes to ruin the friendship or change it slightly or in some ways sabotage it.
In April/ May of this year, I feel I have been distancing myself from people and I during that time, I was spending a lot of time in my room, by myself. I think I had forgotten the feeling of what it's like to go out and have a good night out with my friends and life had just passed me by, life goes on. Despite all the things that you might be going through, regardless of how good or bad they are.
At the same time, I contradict myself because I enjoy the Me time, I like my space. It's very hard for me to find the correct balance between going out and having time out for myself and maintain a healthy balance between my social life and my private life. And I feel like I have two different personalities, I have my social personality and I have my private personality, and I think it's imperative that those two personalities never co-inside or meet with each other.
And I'm only just starting to get back into the swing of reinstating myself and catching up with people whom due to recent circumstances I haven't seen very much of and haven't spoken to for a long while, and it's been lovely to do that. That as a feeling has been really good and it has put me in brighter spirits.
The two people I am going to address in this blog, you can guess from the title, I think they're both amazing people and they make me happy in ways I never thought I could feel.
I like Joel for the reasons that I think he is a very inspirational guy in many ways, particularly in what he does or what he had done in his life. He's completely non-judgemental, very easy going and polite. He comes across as a perfect all-rounder, you like to be in his company and you want to be in his company because of that. I've had quite a few long, honest conversations with Joel and one finds that after having those types of conversations you tend to get to know someone pretty well by doing that.
Mary's a friend, a good friend. She helped me when I was going through a tough time. Since then I have felt she's always been one of my main friends, and someone who is special to me. I do feel particularly close to her. I think all of that is due to the fact that she's gone out of her way to help me in moments when I've felt I needed her and because she wanted to. I think without her help, I don't think I would have been able to come to the right conclusions and resolved the situations I've found myself in. She's been very sincere and kind to me.
Something else that she has done along with two other people over the course of last year which no other friend has done for me before is she has changed me a little. I feel like I have changed for the better having come to know her and two others of my friends who I feel close to also. I do like having a small group of main friends who I can hang around with. It's all come as a bit of a shock to me as this was something I never expected in a hundred years.
What's good about Mary is the fact that I can talk to her about anything and everything, and she makes me feel like I can relax and feel like myself. Which is a feeling, I've only been able to feel when I'm around family. I don't have to feel nervous around her, because she knows me well enough now that I know I don't have to worry about her judging me or thinking various thoughts about me. Because that's something I do tend to worry about, I get concerned or other think things about "oh what does this person think of me?" but I don't have to do that with Mary, she's one of these people who I can be natural around.
I think the reason as to why the friendship that I have with her has lasted for as long as it has is and is still going strong now is because we get on really well and give off good, friendly vibes, we have similar things in common and we laugh a lot. And granted, she may not be in my life all the time, but with love and kindness for your friends, she'll always be there in spirit. I know that sounds a bit cringy but I say it because I think it's true. We treat each other with the same kindness and respect and we look out for one another, as good friends do.
All of this started out as two people getting together to work on a play and getting to know each other. Now, in three months time, Mary will be getting married to Joel and I get to go to their wedding. My friend is getting married to a lovely guy and I couldn't be more happy and proud of her! xx

PODSHOCK
I watched "Seeds of Doom" just the other week and thought, this is a bloody good story. It's fast paced, lots of action, great monster, excellent villains, it's a bit like a spy movie but with science fiction elements to it. Day of the Triffids meets Goldfinger or something like that, not that I think that was the intention Robert Banks Stewart had behind it when he was writing it.
It was from watching the story that gave me the incentive to talk to Tom Walton about writing a sort of sequel to "The Seeds of Doom" and bringing back the Krynoid. I emailed him a synopsis and a small briefing, nothing too drastic, just ideas of what I wanted to get out of it and Tom was very much on board, he replied to my email very quickly with a keen interest to do it, he wrote the script extremely well and did a good job at linking in bits between this idea and Seeds of Doom that make it all connect together well within the continuity of the actual programme.
The Krynoids themselves are a great monster which sadly have never used again in Doctor Who since 1976. But Big Finish brought them back in an Eighth Doctor Adventure called "Hot House" which I recommend you listen to if you haven't already. Fans like myself really like the invention behind the monster and I think that's all partly goes back to how good a story Sees of Doom actually is.
The Krynoid Incursion will be uploaded this Saturday, 16th June
The Keys of Time is an umbrella title that links six new two-part stories together to form the fourth series of Doctor Who Audio Adventures. This arc was conceived by Jaime Harrison, my writing partner, who had proposed it as part of his pitch when coming up with ideas for stories.
So the story starts off with the Doctor traveling in the TARDIS when he is taken out of time to be sent on a mission to go looking for all six keys of time. Each one resembling a form of balance to the universe.
Space (Blue key)
Reality (Red key)
Power (Purple key)
Mind (Yellow key)
Time (Green key)
Matter (Orange key)
On this mission, the Doctor is allowed to be assisted by Pip and Rodney the Robot. The catch is, in order to protect the keys, they are all scattered across the universe, disguised as an ordinary everyday object, the Doctor must track down the object, turn it back into a key and keep it locked up safe in the TARDIS.
Evil forces soon become aware of the Doctor's mission, and they know he's searching for the keys. But what could the forces of darkness want with all six keys of time?
After series three finishes, the Doctor will return in September with the first installment of The Keys of Time.
