1/4 - The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Sunday 2nd December

The story focuses on a family of anthropomorphic rabbits. The widowed mother rabbit keeps her four rabbit children, Peter, Mopsy, Flopsy and Cottontail from entering the vegetable garden of a man named Mr. McGregor. Her triplets (Mopsy, Flopsy, and Cottontail) obediently refrain from entering the garden, but Peter enters the garden to snack on some vegetables. Peter ends up eating more than what is good for him and goes looking for parsley to cure his stomach ache. Peter is spotted by Mr. McGregor and loses his jacket and shoes while trying to escape. He hides in a watering can in a shed, but then has to run away again when Mr. McGregor finds him and ends up completely lost. After sneaking past a cat, Peter sees the gate where he entered the garden from a distance and heads for it, despite being spotted and chased by Mr. McGregor again. With difficulty, he wriggles under the gate and escapes from the garden, but he spots his abandoned clothing being used to dress Mr. McGregor's scarecrow. After returning home, a sick Peter is sent to bed by his mother, and his triplet sisters receive a scrumptious dinner of milk and berries whilst Peter has a supper of chamomile tea.

DOCTOR WHO Review: The Witchfinders

DOCTOR WHO: THE WITCHFINDERS
Written By: Joy Wilkinson
Directed By: Sallie Aprahamian

The Witchfinders is our third historical story of this series, which sees the Doctor and her companions arrive in 1612 Lancashire. So far this year, the historical episodes have been a deliberately slow-paced and measured look at a pivotal situation, leaving the Doctor and her companions skirting cautiously around the boots of history, eager not to damage the footprints. There’s none of that restraint on display this week, though. For reasons as emotive as they are intellectual, Team TARDIS have cause to throw themselves wholeheartedly into the fray and sort the timeline out afterward.

This gleeful abandon lends itself to a tale that isn’t just pacey, it’s sometimes poorly-paced. The first moments of dialogue happen in voice-over, for instance, and there are a number of conversations and encounters that seem almost brutally rushed, but then there’s also a lot of time spent showing the gang tramping through the forests of Lancashire when there really isn’t that much to talk about. If you’ve enjoyed the greater emphasis on meaning and character that Rosa and Demons Of The Punjab provided, you may be left with a mostly-empty stomach following tonight’s episode. Conversely, if you’re a Whovian who’s been itching for the stakes to be raised and a proper peril to present itself, you might find yourself remembering the old adage: be careful what you wish for.
There is also a tendency to have the regular characters state and restate what’s happening so that the writing team are absolutely sure everyone’s on the same page, has permeated this season, but it seems particularly obnoxious this week. There’s the moment, for example, where the alien convicts lunge forward, shouting “Morax!” only for the Doctor to retaliate with a stern “Who are you?” Later, the Doctor posits that the Morax must have been imprisoned on Earth, presumably for war crimes – an observation that would have seemed a lot more intuitive had they not bellowed that exact confession at her five minutes previously. There’s an awful lot of bellowing in this episode, from pretty much everyone concerned.
Alan Cumming's portrayal of King James The First was very good, he was very fun, camp, debonair, grand, and he was swerve which I really enjoyed. There were a certain amount of mellow and dark themes in this episode which reminded me a lot of "The Visitation"

Jodie was good, although I still feel as if she's still finding her feet with getting to grips with the true essence of what the doctor is. But that will all come with time, and by the time we reach her second season, she would have become her own character which viewers can identify with.

As for character development of the regular cast, there was precious little to be found in The Witchfinders. No confrontations, no attempts at inter-generational fist-bumps, none of that – apart from one moment where the Doctor looks to Yaz to determine Granny Morax’s pulse rather than waving her sonic about. While we’re starting to get ideas of where Yaz, Ryan and Graham’s respective strengths might lie, these are all very formative arcs.
What we’re left with, when all is said and done, is a pell-mell but flawed episode that abandons the history lessons in favour of an old-fashioned, monster-driven romp.  If only the aliens had been given the same nuance, care, and screen time that the human villains got to enjoy, this could have been a classic episode. Instead, what we’re left with is a passable story that not only highlights some of the shortcomings every script has suffered from this year but struggles to define who, exactly, the Doctor is, not to mention her place in the universe she’s defended all of her lives. Disappointing.
5/10

Patrick Troughton's Top 5 Best Roles

Patrick Troughton's Top Five Best Roles

Most people know Patrick Troughton best as playing The Second Doctor in Doctor Who, But Patrick, or as he was otherwise known as Pat Troughton was a versatile actor, who had a transcending talent and metamorphic ability to play a very wide range of parts.

Born in Mill Hill on the 25th of March 1920, He acted in a production of J.B. Priestley's Bees on the Boat Deck in March 1937. His brother A.R. Robin Troughton shared the 1933 Walter Knox Prize for Chemistry with the future Nobel Prize winner Francis Crick, who also attended Mill Hill School.

After the war, Troughton returned to the theatre. He worked with the Amersham Repertory Company, the Bristol Old Vic Company and the Pilgrim Players at the Mercury Theatre, Notting Hill Gate. He made his television debut in 1947. In 1948, Troughton made his cinema debut with small roles in Olivier's Hamlet, the Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed Escape (one of the stars of which was William Hartnell), and a minor role as a pirate in Disney's Treasure Island (1950) appearing only during the attack on the heroes' hut. Television though was his favourite medium. In 1953 he became the first actor to play the folk hero Robin Hood on television, starring in six half-hour episodes broadcast from 17 March to 21 April on the BBC, and titled simply Robin Hood. His grandson Sam Troughton played one of Robin's colleagues in the 2006 BBC TV series of the same name, and Patrick himself would make an appearance in The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Richard Greene. He appeared as the murderer Tyrrell in Olivier's film of Richard III (1955). He was also Olivier's understudy on the film and appears in many long shots as Richard.
Troughton's other notable film and television roles included Kettle in Chance of a Lifetime (1950), Sir Andrew Ffoulkes in The Scarlet Pimpernel (1955), Vickers in the episode entitled "Strange Partners" in The Invisible Man (1958, the series also featured one of his future Doctor Who co-stars, Deborah Watling, as Sally), Phineus in Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Quilp in The Old Curiosity Shop (1962), Paul of Tarsus (BBC 1960, title role), Dr. Finlay's Casebook (BBC 1962, semi-regular). He voiced Winston Smith in a 1965 BBC Home Service radio adaptation of Nineteen Eighty-Four. Prior to Doctor Who he appeared in numerous TV shows, including The Count of Monte CristoIvanhoeDial 999Danger ManMaigretCompactThe Third ManCraneDetectiveSherlock HolmesNo Hiding PlaceThe SaintArmchair TheatreThe Wednesday PlayZ-CarsAdam Adamant Lives! and Softly, Softly.
Troughton was offered the part of Johnny Ringo in the Doctor Who story The Gunfighters but turned it down.

Throughout his acting career, Troughton has played a diverse range of roles. These are just some of the roles of which he is most remembered for.

5. HAMMER FILMS

The movies from the Hammer film studios were low in quality and production values, but they retain a cult following and a great deal of affection from fans. Troughton appeared in several, giving perhaps his most notable performances in The Gorgon and The Scars of Dracula (in the latter playing Christopher Lee’s Igor-like manservant). It was whilst he was filming The Viking Queen on location in Ireland in 1966, a tale about Boudicca and one of Hammer’s few titles without a supernatural element, that Troughton famously received the call offering him the part of Doctor Who.

4. JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS

The 1963 film is probably best-known for the sequence in which the heroes have a sword-fight with skeletons, but Ray Harryhausen’s stop-frame animation film stands up to this day. Troughton plays the blind seer Tiresias, haunted by the evil Harpies. He would later appear in another Harryhausen film,  Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977).

3. THE OMEN

Troughton’s Father Brennan character is one of the first victims of the evil child in the classic horror movie, yet the five-minute sequence leading up to his demise, filmed at All Saints Church in Fulham, is one of the greatest and most memorable screen deaths in movie history. Troughton starred opposite Hollywood legend Gregory Peck, and again showed his skill at creating unforgettable characters with little screen time. The morphine-addicted priest living in a room with pages from the bible covering every surface is perhaps only outshone by Billie Whitelaw’s chilling nanny as most striking supporting part.

2. THE BOX OF DELIGHTS

A lasting Yuletide favourite, The Box of Delights has enthralled new generations with its Christmas spirit since its original airing in December 1984. Troughton plays the kind old Punch and Judy man who sets the young Kay Harker (Devin Stanfield) on his adventure. The series was directed by Renny Rye, who went on to make many of Dennis Potter’s later scripts. Troughton is magical in it.

1. DOCTOR WHO

Well, what else could it be? Troughton played the Second Doctor from 1966 to 1969. He always spoke fondly of his time on the show, but he was under enormous pressure and over-worked throughout. Nevertheless, he brought a kindness, quirkiness, and vulnerability to the part, and audiences warmed to his portrayal, which followed on from William Hartnell’s more aloof, austere grandfatherly take on it. With his Beatle-mop and cheeky irreverence, Troughton helped to establish Doctor Who as an iconic part of 1960s British culture. He returned to the role three times, in 1972, 1983 and 1985 and remains enormously popular among fans of the classic series and the remake, and generally regarded as one of the best.

The Box of Delights will be uploaded on to my YouTube channel at Christmas!

Good News for Doctor Who!

Good news! - After the rumours circulating this week of no Series 12 until 2020, Starburst Magazine have contacted the BBC for more information and Starburst have revealed the BBC’s response... “We were told that Series 12 went into production this week and that it will definitely be broadcast next year, as part of the autumn 2019 TV schedule.” We’ve also heard the BBC plan to restore Doctor Who back to its Christmas Day slot for Christmas 2019, meaning we could be seeing the return of the Christmas Specials after all!
Overall, it seems there could be lots to look forward to in 2019 for Doctor Who, with a New Year’s Special to begin the year, Series 12 in Autumn 2019 and a potential Christmas Special on Christmas Day 2019! What are your thoughts?

DOCTOR WHO REVIEW: Kerblam!

KERBLAM
Written By Pete McTighe
Directed By Jennifer Perrott

The Doctor and her companions visit a moon orbiting around the planet Kandoka, where they go undercover at an out of space Amazon. Those are the words I would use to describe Kerblam.

It's good in the sense that, if you're feeling a little un-catered so far to this year's series, and are a fan of unreasonably pejorative language then I'd say that this episode is definitely for you.

There are lots of fun things to enjoy about it. It might take you back to some of the classic Who stories. Stories such as "Paradise Towers", or "Robots of Death". It feels like an 80's story. It also reminded of the Big Finish story starring Sylvester McCoy called "The Warehouse" The sets are sumptuous as ever.

It is a fun and engaging piece of television, even though it's unlikely to ever end up reaching my top favourite stories of all time. The supporting cast give out solid performances.

I felt that there was a good pace to it and the mystery is given a lot more time to mature, permitted to twist itself this way and that before the veil is lifted and the pieces fall into place.

However, sometimes it's difficult to know when a show is deliberately throwing in references to a bygone age for the purposes of getting the audience back on-side and when it’s just dumb luck. 'Kerblam!' well, in a sort of sense, “old-school Nu-Who”, and it’s doubtful the English language could survive one, but there is a distinctly 2007/8 -era vibe to this story I felt whilst watching it. A "Planet of the Ood", perhaps, or 'The Crimson Horror'  or if you’re looking further ahead down the Doctor Who timeline. There’s a touch of Big Finish Eighth Doctor about the whole affair, too, particularly the way The Teammate robots have such a made-for-audio voice.

They looked a bit creepy up close in the close-up shots, I never did trust those robots, I did think an essential part of the plot would be the robots going bad or turning on the human workers.

Where Kerblam doesn't work for me was when we got to the reveal. Throughout most of the episode, it's a nice build-up, with the mystery and the creepy backdrop behind what's happening and asking questions and all of the story before the reveal is good. When the villain is revealed and their reasons for doing it, that puts a downer on the whole thing for me as it's running okay and you get to the end to get let down. It's almost as if you're not watching Doctor Who anymore.

The conclusion and the ending have to be the reason why I give Kerblam a 5/10. I did give it four when I first watched it, and thought, well a four is a bit harsh as it wasn't that bad. I will settle for five.

Next Week's looks very good! but only time will tell that.

DOCTOR WHO: Christmas Special and More!

DOCTOR WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL AND MORE

Hey everyone

Christmas is fast approaching and that can only mean one thing, the Doctor is back.

I'm very pleased with the way that Series Three of the Doctor Who Audio Adventures was received by many of the people who have listened to them, it's always nice to get positive feedback and hear your thoughts and to know that my stories are being enjoyed by fans and audio listeners alike. It puts me in a good and it really makes my day, so thank you.

But now we have to get down to business. The Christmas special this year is based off the Dr Seuss classic children's book "The Grinch that Stole Christmas" I love the movie with Jim Carrey, it's one of my favourite Christmas movies and I thought why not do a science fiction take on that, and see what would happen if the Doctor arrives in a world where everyone loves Christmas apart from one person who hates it and wishes it would go away.  Sort what similar to what they did on TV in "A Christmas Carol" with Matt Smith's doctor. The Doctor encounters a Scrooge-like character in the form of Kazran Sardick. Let's present the doctor with a problem of trying to persuade and allow this sulky creature to experience and open up to the joys of Christmas. Obviously, it won't be a copy of The Grinch, but there will be some strong similarities.

So that's that, the script for that is being written. That should be out just before Christmas day. So that will be a nice treat for my subscribers and to me as well. It's almost ready to be recorded.

Then after that, I have said that the Doctor Who Audio Adventures will be back in February 2019. What I want to do is do a mini-series of four specials, where you get a story each month over the spring into summer. So, one story in February, one in March, one in April, and one in May.

Series Four of Audio adventures will be set to start at the end September/ beginning of October 2019, the series will consist of twelve episodes which will run up until December of 2019. So that will see Doctor Who Audio Adventures all the way through 2019. However; when Doctor Who returns in 2020. It won't be with me.

I have decided to move on and stop being the Doctor, after the 2019 episodes. I have thoroughly enjoyed being the Doctor and playing this part, but I think now is a good time to stop, and give someone else a go and take the series into a whole new direction and open up a new universe of Doctor Who in my own fan zone. I'm expanding the series to a whole new level outside of the small boundaries I sent up when I first started in 2014.

Which means I'm currently looking for a new doctor.

It can be an actor or actress (I'm open to interpretation) aged between 18 and 45. I want someone who is a fun personality, who is energetic, someone who can really make the part their own and put their own stamp on it.

So if you think you got what it takes to be a time lord or time lady, get in touch and let me know, I'd love to hear from you.

I'm still intending to stay on the series as a writer, but after 2019, I will no longer be playing the main role of the Doctor.

That's all I wanted to say.

Hope you all have a good weekend, keep a look out for more updates and all the things coming up in the weeks to come.

Thanks! :)

DOCTOR WHO REVIEW: Demons of the Punjab

DOCTOR WHO
DEMONS OF THE PUNJAB
Written by Vinay Patel
Directed by Jamie Childs

"Demons of the Punjab" - An episode from Vinay Patel that combines elements of Back to the Future, Indian Summers, and Who Do You Think You Are? as the Doctor and her companions take Yaz to see her granny.
It's a deeply sombre and tragic story that takes on big issues. The notion of homeland and of loss as the Doctor and her friends become burdened with a dreadful foreknowledge. There are monsters, Demons which are not all that they seem. I don't know why this is, but the design of them weirdly reminded me of the Nimon. A bit naff.
I loved the location work, all the filming on location looked amazing, and with the new cinematography, the quality of exploring the landscape, they used the location well.  However, there was a mishap of the camera being in shot in one of the scenes.
Like with "Rosa", "Demons of the Punjab" is a story which is quite heavy on the issues it's trying to raise, although it creates good drama and provides emotional depth to the story, you do have to be in the right kind of mood to concentrate and watch it. However, there are some nice light comedy elements to balance it out.
One thing I do feel is, I'm starting to get bored with the writers making references in the script to the Doctor hanging out with loads of infamous celebrities as a means to give her credibility and make her character a little more cocky to compete with her male predecessors. Not necessary. Other Doctors have done it subtly, where I'm sure the Thirteenth doctor has made at least one name drop in all of her episodes.
Yaz was good in this story, I thought Graham was good, and Ryan. Overall good acting from all members of the cast, and I was educated a little into the history of what was happening in India at the time of which this story was set.
I enjoyed most of it, but there's still about forty-one percent of it which I don't understand. So for the other fifty-nine, it's a 6.5/10!

GETTING HOTTER - Firestorm Multiverse

GETTING HOTTER
FIRESTORM MULTIVERSE

"LEAVE. NOW. OR YOU'LL GET A HELLUVA LOT WORSE THAN A SUNBURN..." - fIRESTORM

Two minds sharing one super-powered body, Jason Rusch and Martin Stein are only beginning to master their abilities as Firestorm. However, reconciling Jason's brash personality with Stein's more empirical approach is no small task. While these two don't agree on much, one thing they never argue about is helping Batman rebuild a safer world.

MORTAL KOMBAT XL: Two of a Kind - Ferra/ Torr

MORTAL KOMBAT - TWO OF A KIND
FERRA/TORR
FRIDAY 9th NOVEMBER

Ferra is a small warrior with clawed gauntlets on both of her hands. She sits atop the large brute, Torr, who wears a frayed piece of cloth tied to his face bound by ropes, a single hole in the cloth exposing one of his red eyes. Both wear spiked armor, including shoulder and leg plates, while Ferra wears various leather straps bound around her body and Torr uses ropes to hold his armor and clothes in place. Ferra wears some type of ankle pads on her feet while Torr wears sandals.

Torr's sheer size gives him superhuman strength and durability, easily allowing him to overpower his opponents, while Ferra's smaller frame gives her nimble speed and her bladed gauntlets give her a deadly cut. The duo work well together with Ferra ordering Torr and Torr even using Ferra in conjunction with his charging attacks, adding extra damage. Ferra can also hurt Torr with her claws to enrage him, giving his attacks a stronger edge.
However, sometimes, the pair doesn't work together with Torr doing the fighting, while Ferra cheers on in the sideline, out of harm's way. This doesn't mean that Torr is any less dangerous though, as he is somewhat enhanced with more brutish moves in place of Ferra, allowing Torr to become more aggressive, in combat with the addition of moves that he wouldn't be able to do with Ferra.

DOCTOR WHO REVIEW: The Tsuranga Conundrum

DOCTOR WHO REVIEW
THE TSURANGA CONUNDRUM
Written By Chris Chibnall
Directed By Jennifer Perrott

Mixed thoughts on this episode of Doctor Who. It's one of those cases where a lot was said but not much happened. Character development was good but unbalanced, some bits were sweet, others a bit too dragged out. Yaz was horrendously underused in comparison to Graham and Ryan, and Chibnall though he has a really a great grasp on making people, his villains aren't so great. And a bit too much exposition.
The episode wasn't bad per say, but... Meh.  I haven't yet seen an episode this series that I haven't liked, but at the same time, no episode has yet wowed me or really shocked me. I haven't felt after watching an episode "wow! that was a bloody good story" so the wow factor is yet to come.

We're halfway through the series now, Hopefully, now the next five episodes can offer a bit more excitement and I can find that wow factor that I'm searching for.

I would say that The Tsuranga Conundrum gets a 6/10.
