DOCTOR WHO Review : The Husbands of River Song

Doctor Who Review
The Husbands of River Song
2015 Christmas Special

Merry Christmas one and all! Hope you all had an amazing time yesterday stuffing your faces with Christmas dinner and pudding, drinking booze and eating chocolate or whatever it is you do at Christmas.

Christmas 2015 is done! It's over, and I can't believe the time it's gone so quick. I had such a lovely time myself I didn't really want it to end. With all the festivities came some cracking Christmas telly. Including the annual Doctor Who Christmas Special and for 2015 Steven Moffat has put together a comedy caper featuring the Doctor and River Song. "The Husbands of River Song" was Doctor Who's 2015 Christmas Special.

River Song is back in this. I didn't think we'd ever end up seeing her again. However, having said that to be fair, I did feel there were parts of her story, that were set up from the first time we saw her in "Silence in the Library" that had yet to be resolved and are resolved in this story.

Steven Moffat said in a recent interview about River's return and I quote "I wanted to bring her back, because I didn't think I'd ever get the chance to write for Doctor Who again." and he had also revealed that at the time he was writing the Christmas Special, he had not yet signed on for Series 10. He also said that he would never leave the programme in the lurch. So I'm putting two and two to make four here, although I could be making five. I think the BBC bosses said to him "Ok Steven, you're going but we haven't got anyone to take your place" so Steven must have thought "Oh right, well I guess I'd better stay on for another year then". But that's the story behind Steven Moffat's reasoning for wanting to bring River back. Despite everything I do like her character, even though I know a lot of people don't.

I don't mind the character of River Song, I do find her annoying at times. There were moments in this were I thought "God dam it woman, shut up!" but there you go. There are characters like Amy Pond, Rose Tyler, Susan and Romana 2 who I find more irritating than River Song.

As far as story goes, The Doctor is on this planet in the far future, a little town covered in ice and snow populated by this small earth colony. They are in rule of King Hydroflax (played by Greg Davies) who is meant to be this destroyer and conqueror who people fear and respect, he's slowly dying because he had a diamond lodged inside his brain and River wants to extract that diamond from his head so that she can sell it and make lots of money. She requires the help of a surgeon. So she sends out Nardole (played by Matt Lucas) to find one. He confuses the Doctor for being a surgeon and invites him round to this massive space ship where everything starts to unravel. I should say that once things got going, after they had stolen Hydroflax's head the story was really easy to understand and enjoy. At Christmas you don't want anything overly complicated like last years episode. As much as I enjoyed it, it was hard to follow, this wasn't. This episode is a christmassy type of crime heist.

Compared to other Christmas shows that have been this wasn''t terrible. The jokes were very hit and miss, however humour is something that's very difficult to find in Doctor Who and humour done well in Doctor Who is great, if done badly or not so well and something like this were the comedy is one of the central parts of your story then everything tends to deflate like a ballon.

There's not much to criticise with this as much there was with "Hell Bent" because there's nothing much wrong with the story, the story was fine, production design and make up on the aliens were excellent, the sound was very clear and really good soundtrack all round to emphasise a comparison between moments of tension and moments of comic relief as well as that the editing was very well done, particularly with the title sequence and the snow to give it a nice christmassy feel. very well directed. I guess if I am going to fault anything it would have to come down to performance wise and humour and even they weren't too bad.

The beginning was slow paced but once things started to take off, everything worked very nicely. I would say that your understanding towards The Doctor and River's relationship in this would be better to understand had you consecutively followed all of River's story. This is another thing were the story falls down for me. In parts things between the doctor and river are patchy to say the least or difficult to follow at times. So to me, that wouldn't be clear to how other people who haven't followed it or understand it as well as a fan like me would.

I'm pleased that Derinium was included in this, and the singing towers because before River dies in "Forrest of the Dead" she mentions that to the doctor, and it was good that we finally got to see that. It was also good to actually see how she got the sonic screwdriver. I did feel the sonic trial was stupid and pretentious.

So everything is rapped up with River Song's story. We never ever after this story, ever have to see her in Doctor Who ever again. I'll give it a 6/10 because it's Christmas! :) I look forward to next Christmas and to the next series! This is it for Doctor Who 2015! Nothing now until... well I don't even know what's happening with Series 10, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Merry Christmas from me and have a happy new year! take care! :)

INTRODUCTION to DOCTOR WHO : THE DOCTOR IN THE MIDNIGHT GARDEN

DOCTOR WHO
THE DOCTOR IN THE MIDNIGHT GARDEN - 2015 Christmas Special
Out 31st of December. New Years Eve

NOTES: First of all I'd like to start off by saying Merry Christmas and every all the best for the New Year! Christmas well and truly is the most wonderful time of the year. I can't describe it but there's something about it which just feels magical. Wither it be spending time with your family, the christmas dinner, all the festivities, playing games, having fun, receiving gifts, peace and thanksgiving Christmas well and truly is magic.

Last year's Christmas episode opened up the whole world of my Doctor Who Audio Adventures, and well better late than never. It's been a year since that happened now and a lot has happened since then.

Last year's episode if you'll remember was when my Doctor met Kara Connor for the first time, and encountered the celestial toymaker. This year is something a little different, in which this story features no villains or monsters. It's just a plain and simple heart warming, funny, magical tale of how  much The Doctor matters to just one person. It's set in the Victorian Era, there's a magical garden, there's snow, there's The Doctor in a Christmas Jumper! What more do you want?

Time is the enemy in this story, The Doctor is caught in a temporal causality loop and finds himself ending up in this mysterious, magical, midnight garden where he meets a young girl called Hattie. Over the years the Doctor watches Hattie grow up and mature into a young woman. As people grow up they grow out of believing in things like imaginary friends and life goes on. It's the Doctor's mission to discover why he is such an important part of Hattie's life and what's wrong with time, why does he keep ending up in the same place but different times?

I just wanted to tone it down slightly and just do a story which is more light hearted, nothing heavy like a dalek invasion or something like that. I hope you enjoy it.

AVAILABLE NOW! DOCTOR WHO : Dangers of the Deep

AVAILABLE NOW!
DOCTOR WHO : DANGERS OF THE DEEP IS OUT NOW!

The first of two new Doctor Who specials, Dangers of the Deep is out now. It's on my channel now, so if you have not yet listened to it yet then please, go and listen and check it out and let me know what you think.

Link to the episode : https://youtu.be/6oervSdmCGI - (copy and paste in to your search bar)

Sorry that its taken so long to actually get out, originally this story was scheduled to come out at the end of the Summer, towards the end of August I think. Sadly that didn't happen, there were difficulties with the script. things had to be re-written and tweeked and it just kept getting pushed backed and pushed backed and even though its supposed to be an Autumn Special for Autumn 2015 it's ended up coming out a week before the Christmas story. Time wasn't on my side with this/

This was by far the most technically difficult story that I've done. I hope not to do a story as technically challenging as this again, simply because there were lots of sounds that needed to be added in on top of each other in order to make everything fit and sound authentic. I ended up having to go back and re-edit things over and over and even though the recording was done back in October due to other commitments the editing process for this was a lot slower than I'd hoped. But no fear, Its up now. I got it done in the end.

I hope you enjoy it, I'm really proud of this piece of work. I've worked really hard on it. I've tried to stay professional and yeah, I hope the play on sounds will be able to convince your imaginations that you actually are on a submarine at the bottom of the pacific ocean so thank you, and I hope you enjoy the story!

DOCTOR WHO Review: Hell Bent

Doctor Who Series 9 Episode 12 : Hell Bent

The Doctor is back on Gallifrey to finish what he has started, and this time he is truly Hell Bent.

BIG FINALE SPOILER ALERT : IF YOU DON'T WISH FOR THE SERIES FINALE TO BE SPOILED FOR YOU THEN PLEASE LOOK AWAY NOW. Thank You.

So what did I think of the series finale? well I actually quite enjoyed it. It wasn't a brilliant story by any means however I really liked it. Its a pity to see Doctor Who come to an end, but all series have to end to allow other things to be on telly. It will be back for another series.

I thought It was nice to take The Doctor back to Gallifrey and there were loads of awesome references to other stories which is always great to see. It kind of shows that Doctor Who relies on its past a bit, and that new who and classic who are not two different shows they are the same show and always have been. What I did think was a bit of a shame was that we didn't see enough of Gallifrey 'The Planet' in this. Gallifrey is a beautiful planet and the visionary is just incredible and we didn't get near enough of that at all. There wasn't near enough time lord vs Doctor action in it then I thought there would be, which was disappointing. What we really needed was a two part epic, The Doctor VS The Time Lords. I like "Heaven Sent" but I'd rather have a two part epic finale set on Gallifrey absolutely.

So going into a brief synopsis of what the episode is about, The Doctor is back on Gallifrey hell bent on revenge against the time lords and he plans to take control and save Clara and unlock the mystery behind the whole hybrid thing which has been playing on since the series started.

The Time Lords are one of the doctor's greatest threats in a way. Yes, they are his own people but the doctor's had the fair share of back lash from the high council. I mean he's disobeyed their laws, he stole a TARDIS, rejected offer of the presidency, in their view never really faced to any expectations really. The War Games will show you that the time lords are probably the most powerful race in the galaxy. The top dogs of the universe. They can be very scary when they want to be, and impose a great threat to the doctor because they've done it in the past.

The last time we saw the time lords were in 'The Day of the Doctor' give or take, but the last proper story we saw them in was 'The End of Time' and there the role of Rassilon was played by Timothy Dalton, here we see a much more aged Rassilon played by actor Donald Sumpter. Although he is referred to in the episode as 'The President' not to give too much away. But I clocked that he was Rassilon straight away. It was nice to see the sister hood of Karn back in the show, haven't seen them since "The Magician's Apprentice".

I liked the designs of the capital, the citadel and indeed the matrix itself. It relates back to Gallifrey that we have seen before in previous years, it reminded me a little of the Invasion of Time. Yes it is very modernised now in terms of the design but it had that Invasion of Time feel to it for me. It's a lot better than 80's Gallifrey which is like the reception of the BBC. Robert Holmes's Gallifrey in 'The Deadly Assassin' however will always be the Gallifrey I like to remember however.

It was also nice to see the outside of the citadel and see the wilderness, nice nod to The Invasion of Time, lovely orange backdrop to the wilderness and it gave off a warm breeze which I felt I could feel. The barn is back, haven't seen that since 'Day of the Doctor' or arguably 'Listen'.

Now I wish to clear something up. The people in which the doctor meets in the wilderness, the ones with normal clothes on, they are villagers. The species themselves are not called time lords, the species is gallifreyan. You become a time lord by joining the academy and you have to pass certain exams to become part of time lord politics. So the people we meet in the wilderness are not time lords, they are just simple gallifreyan people. Just wanted to clear up any confusion.

So Clara's back after being killed, the Doctor managed to freeze time and take her out of time and bring her back. I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate the editor or editors on this episode for creating a nice tripping 3D effect, it looked awesome. With Clara back The Doctor was not going to let her go. He rebels against the time lords and runs away with Clara in a TARDIS to the end of everything where the mystery is revealed and Maisie Williams is back, yet again.

Me has been a character that has evolved throughout her time in the series, and has become a key asset to the whole series main storyline. I think she is definitely a character that progressed over time. I mean that in terms of context to do with the show and also time and again in which we've seen her. This is her fourth time we've seen her now, and in all her times we have seen her her character keeps changing and keeps evolving so that by the time we get to where she is in 'Hell Bent' she has seen more than the Doctor has, she's older than him and seen more than him. I do like the idea a lot of the concept of a character to time travel the slow way.

Anyway, her and the doctor have this babble on about who the whole hybrid is, which never really enticed my interests if I'm being honest with you. The whole thing never really had a clear answer and was too confusing. I don't know how anyone watching it would have gone "Oh I get it! I get that completely. That makes perfect sense!". It's just another one of Moffat's plot holes that is conducted really well, but by the time you get to the answer its a shite result.

Anyway the Doctor plans to wipe Clara's memory so that she will forget her time with him ever happened, however Clara does a really bitchy thing in my view and swaps it round so it goes off in the Doctor's face so that its the Doctor that forgets Clara.

He wakes up in Nevada U.S.A completely confused, and the whole thing rounds itself off nicely to the interacted scenes with the Doctor and Clara dressed as a waitress in a diner.

I liked the scenes in the diner, it was a nice break away from the action and gave us as viewers a chance to catch up with what looked like was the doctor telling us a story as if this was meant to lead up to something which it was. The diner was a nice design, it looked like what it was meant to look like a 1950's Happy Days type of place so in that sense it was very authentic.

The scenes in the diner keep going back and forth in-between the parts of whats happening on Gallifrey leading up to the big reveal that the diner is actually a TARDIS, and Clara goes zooming off with Maisie Williams into god knows where. So they've basically turned Clara into the doctor. Which is the one thing that really pisses me off about this episode. As a parting gift to Clara, here you go, avoid an agonising death and here's your own TARDIS. She should have just stayed dead in my opinion. However that being said, it rounds Clara's story off nicely. The Clara Oswald story is done! We never ever again after this story ever have to see Clara in Doctor Who, ever again! Although there is talk already about Me and Clara getting their own spin off series to which I say as polity as possible "No F**king Thank You!".

I would also like to comment on the actual inside design of the TARDIS. It's a classic design, that was deliberate I take it. It's probably how all TARDIS's start off and then The Doctor just put his own personal spin on it. Seeing as it is where he lives and travels around space and time in. You've got to make the customs fit to your satisfaction. Yeah, really nice design, relating back to the 60's model, a bit like Hartnell's and arguably Troughton's as well.

Peter Capaldi, excellent performance from him. He is well in his stride with this part and I hope he remains to be The Doctor for at least another two years.

Jenna Coleman, she was very good too. In 'Face the Raven' she was very cocky and adamant but in this she's rather more taken back in this and is more in a mature stride. I felt that she was playing two different versions of Clara in this episode. There is the Clara on Gallifrey and Clara in the diner. She's the same character but there are ways to differentiate between the two.

I did think it was annoying that Steven Moffat had to feel the need to bring Clara back, so she didn't really die. She should've stayed dead. That's Steven Moffat's biggest problem, he doesn't know when to call it quits and just leave it. Clara's story was finished, she was dead, she did a noble act to save the doctor and she died. boo who, the end. The end of her story. but no, we have to bring her back and drag it out again and literally exhaust the hell out of it until all the enjoyment is drained out of us. Like a sponge to water. A dry sponge is no fun.

Maisie Williams, again. Like Clara, the whole Ashilder / Me thing is done now as well. She doesn't need to come back. Although I'm sure some people will want to see her back. River Song's back for Christmas so who knows.

As a finale, it was so much better in terms of story structure than last years finale. There was just more to go upon, and less things to be confused about. More of a matter of sitting back and relaxing and just watching it for me. Rather than struggling to invest in the Danny Pink thing... blur!

I want to give 'Hell Bent' a well deserved 4/5. Giving the whole story 6/10!

Christmas looks really good as well. I thought it was going to be absolutely awful given who's coming back and the title. However having watched the trailers and seen photos from characters in the episode. It looks to be a really fun and entertaining episode to watch. And the title makes much more sense to me now. So I shall hope to enjoy watching "The Husbands of River Song" on Christmas Day!

Until then see you next series!

INTRODUCTION TO DOCTOR WHO : DANGERS OF THE DEEP

COMING SOON

DOCTOR WHO : DANGERS OF THE DEEP
OUT 15TH OF DECEMBER 2015

NOTES: I always wanted to do a story set on a submarine underwater, everything can go wrong. The Doctor joins this crew on a mission into the unknown, he doesn't want to be there and the crew don't want him around however that being the situation they have to put up with each other as they go on this fun filled, exciting rather sinister adventure.

They discover a lost pirate ship, become under siege from ghosts and come across an alien far from home. I wanted to get a balance of sinister and adventure right with this and I hope the creative concepts of this story captivate your imagine as you listen to it.

COMING SOON: DOCTOR WHO - THE AUDIO ADVENTURES SERIES 2

COMING SOON
DOCTOR WHO
THE AUDIO ADVENTURES SERIES TWO
SPRING 2016

So its getting to that time of the year again, where Doctor Who Audio Adventures are coming back. This is where I talk about the new series which is well under way, and from the lovely positive response I got for the stories last year I hope to keep that positivity up, remain professional.

So what is there to expect? well beside from the two new specials which will see the series run up to Christmas and conclude the adventures series run for 2015, the run for 2016 will start on Friday 15th of January or there round about that time.

In this series, there is a new companion, Daleks, Cybermen, Zygons, the return of the master, new story lines, new monsters, lots of bits of everything so there will trips to the past, murder mysteries, space travel, adventures set on other planets and hopefully you'll be able to expand your imaginations to picture the story in your head based off what you're listening to. That's why I love radio plays, you can simply picture your own story, your own setting and your all set.

With film and tv you are seeing the setting marked out for you, because you can see it, with radio you don't have that. Therefore it makes it all the more exciting, to be able to imagine your own planet or street corner or whatever based on the suggestions of sounds playing on your mind.

Doctor Who : The Audio Adventures Series Two will follow the events set up at the end of Series One to enable taking the Series of these Adventures up to a new level of thrill and excitement and moments of drama in the stories which hasn't quite been established so much in Series One.

It's more experimental, so I'd be interested to see what works and what doesn't work quite so well.
