Doctor Who - Fun Facts About Season 18

DOCTOR WHO
FUN FACTS ABOUT SEASON 18

Originally broadcast between August 1980 and March 1981, Tom Baker’s final season as the Fourth Doctor was released on Blu-ray this week.

From watching the new box set this week, I thought it would be quite fun to present some fun facts about Season 18 that you may not have known already, especially if you're a Doctor Who fan. On the other hand, you might read these and think this doesn't come to any surprise to me at all.

Have a look through and see for yourself.

1. There’s a lot of real science in The Leisure Hive, but Tom had no idea what was going on.

2. The Opening scene in The Leisure Hive wasn't actually filmed in Brighton. It was in Hastings.

3. The Producer John Nathan Turner (JNT) and Tom didn't get on very well. They would often clash on certain things. Tom deplored a lot of things about the season and some of JNT's decisions.

4. There was tension as Tom and Lalla Ward wouldn't always see eye to eye. Having to deal with one difficult actor is bad enough, but two, kind of throws the cat amongst the pigeons. It made time on the set awkward to film and they would be some occasions where Tom would refuse to make eye contact with Lalla.

5. Tom's old age make up was ahead of its time.

6. Sarah Sutton who played Nyssa and Janet Feilding who played Tegan didn't like Tom very much and Sarah Sutton said that she probably wouldn't have continued in the programme for very long if Tom had stayed.

7. Towards the end of the season, the curls in Tom's hair are starting to go, his hair is starting to grey, he's looking older, and looking more miserable because of all the changes.

8. When Logopolis had finished filming and the director had called "wrap" Tom went straight home after the recording and didn't socialise with anyone, he just left.
