DOCTOR WHO Review - The Witch's Familiar

Doctor Who Review : Series 9 Episode 2 - "The Witch's Familiar"

The Doctor is trapped and alone on the planet Skaro, at the heart of the Dalek empire, no sonic, no TARDIS, no help. After last week's hair raising cliffhanger which left all us viewers guessing and wanting more, the answers were all finally revealed and things came to their natural conclusion to resolve this two part story.

Should probably put a spoiler alert out before I start this review, you may not want to read this if you haven't seen the episode and don't wish it to be spoiled for you.

As an episode I really enjoyed "The Witch's Familiar" it wasn't any out of this world or brilliant, but I did think it was good. It's not uncommon for me to enjoy new doctor who. I know there are some pretentious people out there and think I love every classic series story and hate every new series story which isn't true at all.

I really liked the way the episode started, the pre title scene with Missy and Clara and how they managed to escape The Daleks. We get to learn how Missy survived after she was blasted in Death in Heaven (Last year's series finale) I've become drawn to like Missy now. Michelle Gomez, just has that talent of acting strange in a very weird and disturbing way but at the same time she gets one up on you, I feel like she understands her character totally and plays it the way it should be done - straight and also a little bonkers but not over doing it. I also liked the fact that for the majority of this episode Clara was with Missy. They work very well together and the dynamic they have is very different to the type of dynamic Clara has with The Doctor. It's always good to mix things up and do the right things when they come along.

So we are five minutes into this episode and Where's The Doctor? He's with Davros. It's clear that Davros and The Doctor have a history together. This episode attempts to deal with issues that have been left unresolved since 'Genesis of the Daleks' back in 1975. I have to say both Peter Capaldi and Julian Bleech give fantastic performances in those one to one scenes. It's been a while since we got a good one to one stand off between The Doctor with any big baddie really. I feel like we got it in this episode. It was a lot better developed then say 'Journey's End' for me at least, because when you got a baddie as good as Davros who is up there in the top 5 as The Doctor's worst enemies as he is the man behind the Daleks. The Daleks have killed millions of people and destroyed planets, dominated and terrorised throughout the whole entirety of the shows history.

I'm not overly keen on one to one stand offs, I tend to be very particular, mainly because I find them lacklustre in terms of action. There have been some great one to one stand offs in plays, films and tv shows which I have liked, but a one to one stand off done badly is very dull and boring. This wasn't dull and boring at all, what Davros and the Doctor talk about in this episode, the last time there was a one to one stand off as good as that between the Doctor and Davros was in the Big Finish story "Davros" (2003) with Colin Baker's Sixth Doctor and Terry Malloy's Davros.

I really liked watching those scenes and Davros as a character has hidden agendas as well, showing symphony and affection actually congratulating The Doctor and showing a more sentimental side. What did it for me was when Davros opened his eyes for the first time, that was the first time we saw that happen on screen. (being nit picky however, seeing as Davros was in a tragic and horrific accident, I would have preferred it and it would have looked more realistic if the eyes were pink, maybe a bit more blood shot perhaps.) he's never opened his eye's why? well now we know. of course it was all an act to get The Doctor to hand over his regeneration energy but it was very cleverly done.

Another favourite part of mine was Dalek Clara, and the identity of showing a friend within the foe. I thought that was really good, it's very original especially with this type of enemy (the daleks). I liked all of Clara's bits in this story, both parts one and two. Jenna gives off a very strong performance throughout.

The only nip picks were, the eyes could have been a bit more blood shot - a bit pink, sonic glasses, the ending was spoiled a bit by having it rushed. I think it needed a bit more polishing just to resolve it as 'the end' just to round things off.

Overall, praises all round, no heavy criticism's this week which I love. I want to watch Doctor Who and enjoy it, I love it, it's my favourite show on TV. I never want to not moan about it. but not all the stories are brilliant. Great Dalek stuff going on, nice mixtures of different types of dalek. Mainly though it did what it set out to achieve which was focus on The Doctor and Davros which it did. The only thing I was confused about was the title.

I'll give 4/5. Making it 7/10 for the whole story.

NEXT WEEK : Under the Lake.

DOCTOR WHO Review - The Magician's Apprentice

DOCTOR WHO REVIEW : Series 9 Episode 1 - "The Magician's Apprentice"

So Doctor Who came back to our screens, the past Saturday (19th of September) after a long hiatus.
It was a very bold way to open the series, the way it has and obviously it was a clear step into a new direction in terms of the production path way and the way Steven Moffat wants to present the series.

Now before I begin this review, this is going to be filled with Spoilers so if you haven't seen the episode and you don't want it to be spoiled you may want to turn away now.

We know Capaldi's Doctor now, and he's still developing great characteristics. Clara and Missy are also back, as are Kate Stewart and the new UNIT Team.

Being totally honest even though this is a two parter and I know that my glass should be half full rather than half empty, I felt as an episode it was nothing more than just Okay. I know there are some people who loved it and others who didn't like it quite so much, however I felt it was Okay. The Dalek stuff I liked a lot and the light humour not so much.

This episode is set in three different settings, Modern day Earth (2015), Medieval Times (1138) and the planet Skaro (Planet of the Daleks) I was sceptical at first as to how three settings were going to necessarily work in one episode but honestly it worked out to be just fine, every thing had a reason for being there and it flowed really well in terms of going from one place to the other. We also visit destination like the Planet Karn and The Shadow Proclamation as well.

It's great that we got Davros back, its been a while since 2008 we last saw Davros and now he is back. I'm pleased that they got Julian Bleech back to play Davros as he did such a brilliant job the last time and he was a bit nutty in 2008, but that was due to the way he was written. In this Davros is written a lot better, he's not so off his nut. In any case he is dying, and he summonds the Doctor to his bed sit.

Meanwhile Clara and Missy are on a mission to find The Doctor, the two of them team up and find The Doctor in medieval England, in an arena of some sort to which The Doctor makes a dramatic entrance on a tank playing the guitar and this is where things started to get a little bit silly for me. It all leads back to that light humour which doesn't quite work, I personally wasn't to keen on the lighter humours moments that the episode had to offer.

I liked all the stuff with Colony Sarff, I thought the effect of Sarff was good when he unraveled and turned into a giant snake, that was brilliant and a really impressive technique.

All in all, for me it was all about leading up to the last fifteen minutes as that for me was the best part of the episode overall. We're on Skaro, We got Daleks and lots of them, including classic Daleks such as 60's versions, Remembrance renegade, Special Weapons Dalek, Evil of the Daleks Emperor Guard, even a lookalike Dalek Sec, though I prefer to see it as just being a black Dalek, We got Davros, We got a helpless Doctor, Companion in jeopardy. What more do you want to situate the definition of 'peril'.

What kind of ruined it for me was the trailer at the end of the credits, I would have preferred it if there wasn't a trailer because by having a trailer, it gives you an insight in what to expect and with a story which ends on such a chilling cliffhanger; a trailer takes the fun away of not knowing what to expect.

Clara and Missy are supposedly killed by the Daleks, which I think is quite interesting. I know they're going to be fine because there's the rest of the series to go but still even knowing that it kind of puts you on the back foot into what to expect in this story.

We also get treated to some nice clips from various other Doctors from other Davros stories such as Tom Baker in Genesis in that famous bit in Genesis where he has the wires in his hand and he's ready to do it and we get the quote of 'if you knew a child could grow up to be evil and kill and destroy millions of lives, could you kill that child knowing what he'll become'. as well as that we got clips from the Fifth Doctor in Resurrection, The Sixth Doctor in Revelation, The Seventh Doctor from Remembrance, etc. I thought that added a nice touch of reference to the scene, especially the Tom Baker quote from Genesis.

The main question that sits in our minds at the end is, will The Doctor kill a young Davros in order to save Clara and Missy?

I don't quite get how Davros survived, because as soon as The Doctor knew the little boy in the marsh pit was Davros, he left him alone. How did he survive? to me that's not clear. And also why was this episode called 'The Magician's Apprentice'?  those two bits are the only bits that don't make sense. other than that I thought it was an okay episode.

I look forward to the next part. But for now, I'm going to give it a 3/5.

NEXT WEEK : The Witch's Familiar.

DOCTOR WHO REVIEWS : Best Monster of Series 1!

Hey There!

Just letting you all know that the results are in for the latest vote. I sent out a message a week ago leaving it up to you to decide the best monster for series 1 of the audio adventures out of the thirteen stories, and fourteen episodes. Again, this one was a close call between the top two but I'm very pleased to say that the results are in.

The Cybermen are the Number 1 Monster of Series 1!

Yes! You voted The Cybermen as the best monster of Series One and for good reason. They planned to take over a control base on the moon, seize control of the moon's gravity in order to tear the ball from its orbit and wreck all of earths echo systems. and they would have succeeded if not for the doctor.

In desperate situations The Cybermen are far more terrifying than in other Cyberman stories.

For those of you who are interested, here is the rest of the results based on the anonymous feedback survey.

2. The Daleks
3. The Ripper Robot
4. The Zygons
5. The Ghoul
6. The Mara
7. The Khalthronians
8. Dinosaurs
9. The Monster from underneath George's Bed.
