SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE MANOR HOUSE AFFAIR
From the Journal of Dr Watson
In the company of Sherlock Holmes I have often looked upon the bodies of the dead and murdered. As a medical man one gets used to such scenes. Yet the murder of Alice Jones stands out in my mind as if it occurred yesterday, not two years ago.
It began with a summons to the Manor House, Dorrington, the home of stockbroker Darnley Adams. As I can recall, Inspector Lestrade accompanied us on this occasion. We were met by Mrs Adams.
"Alice came to us as a maid servant five months ago. She was a quiet girl, only sixteen, hardly spoke at all. The butler found her body when he opened the study doors this morning. There were signs of a struggle. Oh, and her bed had not been slept in'.
"Perhaps you would like to see the scene of the crime?" interjected Adams. The body lay on the floor near the windows. Upon inspection the face was hideously contorted and a deep purply red in colour. The pretty brown eyes stared lifelessly at us. At first sight cause of death was obvious; round her neck was twisted a length of cord. "The butler, Carson, found the window open', continued Adams.
"Anything Stolen?" asked Lestrade.
"Nothing we can so far establish. How long will this take?"
"Murder is a serious affair" Holmes said sharply. "Now who was present in the house?"
"But I am sure it was a burglary".
"Quite so. Now, who was present?"
"My wife and I. The staff. My son, Graham - aged 14, home from Eton for the Summer. My daughter Virginia, she's 15 and my friend, Mr Justice Riley. It was he who suggested we bring you in on the case, Mr Holmes'.
"This is all perplexing, Watson," said Holmes when we were alone in the study. 'Why should a burglar break into this house, with all the risk that entails, murder a young girl in her master's study and then leave with no loot? We appear to be without a motive. The manner of death seems clear, yet... there is something."
"1. How Alice Jones died,
2. Who murdered her,
3. Why she met her death,"
The game is afoot!
